Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez, a controversial writer and possibly one of the last surviving NYC “Bookies” from the 70’s and 80’s publishes his fourth book and first novel - Papi’s Lover.

Miami, Florida (July 19, 2018) – Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez, a controversial writer and possibly one of the last surviving NYC “Bookies” from the 70’s and 80’s publishes his fourth book and first novel - Papi’s Lover.

Barriere-Mendez was involved in the numbers racket from the early age of nineteen in NYC. He was involved with the underground world entity known as "The Corporation" (La Corporacion) and later became a full fleshed "Bookie” (Bolitero) on his own. This world brought him to a life of excess and drug abuse and he became homeless at the age of thirty-three. Barriere-Mendez's addiction ended on June 24, 1994, and four years later he went on to study philosophy and literature and acquired his degree.

His literary work includes sixty short stories (27 of them published), an adventure story (Last Brothers, published in Shadowboxing), an applied theory of self (published - Out of the Woods), a theatrical play (Man Deconstructed, published in Shadowboxing) and three novels; the first of which is Papi's Lover, which will be published and available this Saturday, July 21 with a presentation and book signing event at Books & Books Coral Gables at 7pm.

Papi’s Lover is a different kind of love story, a gritty work of urban realism that will take us through a whole gamut of emotions.  The setting is the bustling streets of Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan. The atmosphere is one of danger and fascination, of illegal activities and rawness. The novel is inhabited by shady and precarious characters, their purpose and agenda is one of survival among the constant daily-ness that surrounds and forces individuals into difficult decisions and chancy situations. Its backdrop is the underground world of the numbers racket known as ‘La Bolita’ and the entity known as ‘La Corporacion’, a world Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez is very familiar with.

The narrator is a fascinating story-teller that amuses us with its fusion of wisdom and sensibility, its poetic prose, accurate and insightful analogies and aphorisms, its ability to make us see the story as it unfolds, as if we are watching a movie with every scene clearly outlined and told, in an intelligent and easy to internalize language.

The reader will love and feel for every one of these characters; will enjoy their laughter and will cry their tears; will feel their exaltation and will suffer their fears and insecurities. The novel delivers characters that will not be soon forgotten and a story line that will remain with us for a long while. To stay aloft and non-invested will be an impossibility, such is the magic and mystic of Papi’s Lover, the novel.

OUT OF THE WOODS, An applied theory of self

Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez’s new book “Out of the Woods, An Applied Theory of Self” is an inspiring and insightful guide to life.

Recent release “Out of the Woods, An Applied Theory of Self” from Page Publishing author Jorge A. BarriereMendez is a brilliantly crafted elucidation of a path to self-discovery and personal growth.

Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez has completed his book “Out of the Woods, An Applied Theory of Self”: a thoughtprovoking template for introspection and the vanquishing of fear.

Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez was born in Cuba and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He studied Literature and Philosophy and has published two earlier books: Vacuity in 2003 and Shadowboxing in 2015. Both of his previous publications are collections of short stories.

In describing the book, Barriere-Mendez states “I stand here with a difficult task: to propose and to discuss an Applied Theory of Self that saved my life. Let me say that again – saved my life. I wish someone else had written it thirty years ago and had placed it in my hands. It would have been a life with less heartache and headaches. A better, fuller life.”

Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez’s powerful book is an incredibly stimulating read. It is informative and thought-provoking with each turn of the page.

The book takes the ontological perspective of idealism to negotiate a compromise between determinism and indeterminism. Barriere-Mendez asserts that the true nature of reality is internal and that we must become familiar with this inner reality in order to conquer our fears. He posits that this awareness and victory over fear is what sets those who truly determine the course of their own lives apart from those who do not.

Barriere-Mendez provides three steps, twelve insights, and ninety-two addendums that will allow the reader to find a simpler, truer reality where they can be themselves fearlessly—a spirituality that’s based on experience and not necessarily faith; a practical spirituality to be practiced in our world and reality and not on distant mountain tops.

Readers who wish to experience this potent work can purchase “Out of the Woods, An Applied Theory of Self” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play or Barnes and Noble.

shadowboxing, a collection of short stories

Jorge A Barriere-Mendez has completed his second book “Shadowboxing”: a gripping and potent exploration of the nature of fear through a collection of stories and self-examinations.

When asked about his inspiration for the book, Barriere-Mendez said, “The way I conclude about important things is by writing. I create characters and situations and then I listen to my characters as they sort things out for me. Mostly, I’m interested in fears – all manifestations of fears. I believe that all we say and do, we say and do because of a fear, all can be retraced to a fear. To understand that dynamic (how our fears dictate who we are and become), inspired me to write this and all that I have ever written.”

Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Jorge A Barriere-Mendez’s poignant tales span across a ten-year period. The stories in the book take the form of an intriguing inner-dialogue, which confronts deep ontological issues. The reader is taken through a riveting exploration of the anxieties and fears inherent to human nature itself.

This creative and introspective work is sure to keep readers in contemplation. It is sure to please anyone looking for a thought-provoking read. The last section of the book is a highly imaginative post-apocalyptic story about a new beginning for mankind that reads like a movie. Humankind’s future is in the hands of children that must survive a haunted and mysterious forest full of hungry midgets, strange animals, and wicked gods. A new possibility for man that may, indeed, never happen.

Readers who wish to experience this gripping work can purchase “Shadowboxing” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play or Barnes and Noble.

An interview with alicia smock from roll out reviews

In the words of Alicia Smock

Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of reading author Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez’s new novel Papi’s Lover. It is a different kind of love story that I was quickly drawn into within the first few pages. Dark, gritty, unique, enticing, and real are the best words I can use to describe this excellent addition to the world of literature and I would encourage any reader to pick up a copy and place it towards the top of their neverending “to read” lists.

Synopsis: Papi, an important underground crime boss, unexpectedly passes away at an early age. At his wake, his family tries to celebrate his passing as he would have wanted, but it is difficult not to mourn. The wake is turned upside down when a young woman named Daisy arrives: she was requested to make an appearance at his wake by Papi himself to reveal herself as his seven-year lover. Not only does this strong independent woman have to cope with her lover’s family, but she also must help her lover’s partner pay off an old debt to some dangerous people or else all who were close to Papi will face dire consequences.

Shortly after reading and reviewing Papi’s Lover, I was given the wonderful opportunity to talk to the talented author behind this enticing novel and what an interview it was. It is always wonderful to hear what authors have to say about their stories. To hear all that goes into writing just one story is truly inspiring and Jorge is most certainly an inspiration to readers and authors alike. Normally when I write interviews I have had with authors, I write the articles as I write my reviews: in third person and almost like a story of the author with direct quotes from them. However, what Jorge had to say simply could not be written like my past articles. Readers should be able to read all of the amazing things Jorge had to say for themselves, not just on his book or even his future books, but about life itself. So, without further ado, may I introduce Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez, author of Papi’s Lover.
